I am no stranger to adversity. My first marriage was to one with Multiple Sclerosis. He could not handle the sun, ergo no beach vacations. Our indoor temp was akin to a refrigerator. Stress caused exacerbations. He could not handle parenting which involves a fair amount of tough love during the teen years. We were married for 29 years. (I had to learn a new language; I call it Minnesotan, with a long O and a Scandinavian lilt. But I perfected it, in addition to being the quintessential hostess.) Many years followed of shots in the thigh and prednisone drips brought to our home (always when our children were in school, so as not to alarm them), footdrop and finally incontinence occurred because 95% of his brain was covered in plaques. He was a white collar corporate man, bringing binders to meetings, flying as a consultant all over the USA but eventually could not move from the neck down, moved to a hospice where Alzheimers set it in and then death.
I am now married to a carpenter who is all brawn; we have been married 11 years; he spent most of his life hoisting timber to make decks, pergolas [like the one above], and worked on full-home restorations and commercial restorations, until 2022 when an injury to the shoulder make retirement imminent. He is a Marine so he has perfected cussing about that situation and the state of our world. (I frankly never knew the F word had so many meanings and different inflections. And, strangely enough, I am OK with it. Sometimes it's the best word to use. I also had to learn a 3rd language; I call it SOUTHERN. It lops the endings off words and stretches vowels out for miles.) Nearly all of his life has been spent doing hard labor and his body knows it. He says what he means and means what he says, and he is one of those poisoned by NINE toxins dumped into the Camp LeJeune water, with five cancers removed in the past 11 years. For some reason, they keep growing back. I fight monthly with the VA to get documentation, which they hold close to the vest as they did with the water case. The bulldog mascot suits us both, to be perfectly frank. A poodle just wouldn't work.
I am being this frank become it is important to be FRANK and honest as a life coach; my life has not been perpetually charmed. I am a SURVIVOR, like you, and I can guide you back from darkness to light, from shutting down and feeling hopeless, to opening up again and living fully. I have enough compassion mixed with tough love to get you back on track. I will not be your enabler. I will be a bulwark and buttress. There is no reason you should be in the stuck position, not moving forward, spinning muddy wheels in the past, which you cannot change. Even if you are living with a spouse who has chronic and debilitating medical problems, that does not mean that YOU have to be equally disabled, not should you ever be asked to stop all of the activities you love, just because your significant other cannot move. You have a right to LIVE and LIVE FULLY. God gave you that right and none shall take it away from you.
I will help you set achievable goals so you feel good about yourself and move from a place where VICTIMHOOD resides, which is filled with shadows and nasty cobwebs, to EMPOWERMENT which is filled with light, fresh air and GROWING things.
